It's parkour. It's been deemed "urban gymnastics". Basically running around a city (or whatever) using every available object as equipment. There's some pretty crazy stuff done. I train a few parkour practitioners. Pretty regular injuries due to the whole pavement thing. Don't know what the catastrophic injury rate is in this.

Not as much as you may think. Those of us who are instrumental in the spread of Parkour make a point to stress a slow and steady progression. We also attempt to paint the picture of Parkour as an art/sport where you practice fluidity and effeciency rather than jaw-dropping stunts. Though the Dvinsk clan kids are amazing athletes, what they do is deemed more along the lines of street-stunts and tricking. The difference may not seem obvious, but lets put it this way; most people would rather look at a bodybuilder than a crossfitter, and most people would rather see an amazing video of street-stunts than a true Parkour video.

Nothing against them at all, though, but it scares me that I train kids that can be influenced by these things so easily. I hope I never have to scrape one of them off the pavement because of a lack of proper progression.

Along those lines, check out the new website we've finally got running:

Especially important are the items in the upper right, about what Parkour is and isn't, which is a good primer into the basic mindset and philosphy. Also feel free to register and download the video "Dispersion" that myself and the rest of the VA-Parkour crew finished over the summer. It's more along the lines of varied, effecient movement (save a few acrobatic moves by the gymnast/divers in the group) in different environments.

I have been thinking about writing an article along the lines of the "Everyman's Gymnastics" (funny I should post directly after you Roger) about how Parkour training would be an excellent modality for improving endurance, power, agility, coordination, balance and accuracy outside of the gym.

Hey Jesse, the Dispersion video is both entertaining and inspirational regarding the practice of fluid, efficient and graceful movement. Thanks for the site and the video. Parkour is now on my goals/focus list for 2006!

By the way, what is the proper pronunciation of "Parkour?"
