My left shoulder catches and pops when it passes my ear everytime I rotate my arm backwards. I get some pain from it while working out, I noticed it today while doing jumping pullups. I've heard about this problem a while back at another place. Anyone have any idea how to fix it? Thanks in advance.

Could be tight/cramped rotator cuff muscles or rhomboids.

Massage, looking for hard lumps of tissue (feeling like a rubber cable). If you find them, massage deep and with lots of pressure. Yes, it will hurt.

See http://www.crossfit.com/discus/messages/27/14941.html for more info about how and why to massage.

Use a wall hook (see http://www.crossfit.com/discus/messages/27/17712.html) for easier massage.

See http://triggerpoints.net/userfiles/Rhomboid.jpg, http://triggerpoints.net/userfiles/Supraspinatus.jpg, http://triggerpoints.net/userfiles/Infraspinatus.jpg, http://triggerpoints.net/userfiles/Subscapularis.jpg, and http://triggerpoints.net/userfiles/Teres_Minor.jpg for anatomy and likely spots.

You can massage the subscapularis by sitting down, letting the affected arm hang down, inserting the other hand into the armpit and pressing the fingertips upward, inward, and slightly back.

Good luck, and fast recovery,

Christian
