To Judo, or not to judo. That is the question.
Alright, so i've wrestled all my life. And I have always loved throwing. I would love to work some more throwing into my wrestling, plus judo looks really fun. So should I join classes at my local (dojo?
) Is it as fun as it looks. And do you think there will be anything that could carry over to wrestling? |

no question. I wrestled in high school, took a few years out of high school to work, then when I went back to college, I joined a local judo club... the mat skills you already have will give you tremendous advantage. |

Judo should give you what you want. But before you start throwing you should learn to fall. One of those things you don't really get with wrestling. A lot of your skills should transfer and give you a great advantage against the beginners (the aggression and familiarity with the ground) but there are some changes you will need to make. Your judo throws will be based on accepting energy rather than driving into your opponent as with many wrestling takedowns.

good decision-
And they will teach you to "fall" Lots of skill work when you start taking classes. When they break the class into pairs to work on throws, chokes, etc., and you have the opportunity to be paired with people of higher ranks - brown belts, black belts, etc., do it. Use it as an opportunity to learn. Incredibly valuable. Working with people who have the same skill set as you is fun too - but it is always better to work one-on-one with people who will push you to get the moves exactly right. |

Dude, Judo is one of the only arts that have ever mattered. I love submission grappling and I wish I had Judo locally available.

While wrestling is an awesome skill set to come into judo with and will start you off a solid foundation to build your newaza game from, judo is something that is not as readily incorporated into your wrestling game.

I agree that it is a one way street however so is the wrestlers career, By age 25 ( 18 for most 21 for many and 25 for all except the elite) your over with wrestling. Bring your wrestling with you into judo seems like a one way journey that has little reason for resistance by the student. Going from something as controled and limited as wrestling to judo will create the type of open mind that a student needs for street confrentation Every pure wrestler has realized at least once in their life that they are in a street fight and they are getting hit and its an awsome idea to do that also. If its there for you to do judo follow your interets |

Get in there Adam youll love it m8!
![]() Even IF there isnt much direct skill transfer to wrestling (and there might be some merit in that) - your still getting a look at another skill set and training method and bunch of athletes. Even if you only do it for a few months your horizons are much broadened for the experience.... Personally i like to check out most classes and styles in the area (dont necessarily stick around in all of them and they vary in quality) but you might have some world class athletes on your doorstep or some ninja bad art that is JUST what you always hankered for. It would be a crime to miss out on that opportunity on account of not being adventurous enough. |
