Do those type of cups require the Jock strap that you insert them into or can you just put it into your underwear?

Re: Starting MMA Training, Need Groin Protector and Mouth Piece advice

I was pretty happy with the Shock Doctor stuff. I got one of their middle-of-the-road mouth guards, and the cup without the steel insert. It fit well and worked well, although the jock strap bit that holds the cup wound up coming unstitched after a while.

This was all for light-contact sparring, although I am pretty slow and clumsy, so I would up walking into a lot of strikes that left my neck pretty stiff later. Didn't chip any teeth or get KO'd! Went through a few "cup checks," too, and survived without significant damage.
