Did a no-no at Planet Fitness

3 of us were at Planet Fitness in Lewiston, Maine, tonight doing a WOD (20 minutes of 4 burpees, 8 pushups, 16 squats), wearing t-shirts saying "Crossfit" on them. We were told that we were violating Planet Fitness policy, which says you can not instruct or lead others in exercise.

Okay fine, we are doing an exercise together and since it is going for max sets none of us are even doing the same exercise at the same time, nor is anyone instructing another person. We were encouraging but other than not not much else going on. What PF said was the issue is that one of us (one person there is level 1 cert) had come up with an exercise routine so therefore he was leading us. The only one that is allowed to lead or instruct is the PF staff trainer. I then posed the manager on duty (Sarah) a question: "What if 3 people came in, 2 ask what should we do tonight and the third said I know, lets do 3 sets of bench presses and 3 sets of squats, would this be against club policy". To give her credit she answered that yes it would be against club policy.

At no time were we trying to recruit other people in joining us in our WOD, and we are club paying members. I guess PF doesn't want us as member. Hopefully we'll get something setup where we can workout and can drop the PF memberships.

Wayne,
It sucks that you gym is acting like that. Just horrible. I guess it's their rules though.

You may want to look into your local YMCA. I don't know how the one in Lewiston is, but the Ellsworth YMCA is very accommodating.

They allow us to do anything we want. We are amassing a sizable following in the AM's. They are even going to let us put up our own CF board with the mainsite WOD so we can all compete against each other. They let us bring in our rings and our bumper plates and our extra bars. For the time being it seems that our YMCA is just happy to keep people coming in thru the door.

I hope something works out for you.

I also cant complain about the YMCA I train at. I cant drop wiegths and that pretty much (more or less) it. So cant do oly lifting were theres a risk I may have to drop the wiegth from overhead.

Have a Y in the town next door (Auburn), pretty much the same town. I'm sure we'll be talking with the general manager at PF and see what she has to say. Hopefully we can find another place where we workout without fears of being told "no, you must workout our way!".

So if you're going to go lift with a buddy you both have to independently arrive at the workout you're doing together?

According to the manager on duty last night, yes. Or even if you arrive at different times if one of you says "Hey, lets do this exercise" you would be in violation of club policy as you would be leading someone in an exercise.

Have each person have their own timer.

Re: Did a no-no at Planet Fitness

Did a check of there rules, here is what I found:
Rules:
* An alarm (referred to as the "lunk alarm") is set off when individuals drop weights or "grunt" when lifting.
* The banning of grunting, swearing and psyching-up rituals.
* No cell phone use on the gym floor.
* The banning of excessive noise from bar drops etc. e.g. Olympic lifts.
* The restriction of dumbbell weights to a maximum of 80 pounds
* No squat racks
* The banning of chalk, often used for heavy lifts such as deadlifts.
* No jeans, bandannas, do rags or skullcaps.
* Must wipe down equipment after each use.
* No gawking at women and making them feel uncomfortable or trying to pick them up.
* Short or revealing attire for men or women is banned.
* References to sexual orientation or any other offensive conversation is prohibited.
* No lewd acts or public affection on the premises.

Funny thing is I've seen people chatting away on cell phones while using equipment in there.

"No gawking at women and making them feel uncomfortable or trying to pick them up."

This is the biggest BS rule I have ever seen.

But...The gym is their only refuge in a world that objectifies them and values them only on their appearance. The last remaining bubble of fair and courteous treatment that remains, the only place they can feel free to wear not-too-revealing workout attire or not talk about their sexuality is the gym!Don't take that away from them as well. It must be such a hard life being a hot chick.
