Any correlation with elbow pain and the diameter of your pull-up bar?

My pull-up bar at home and work is made of 1" black iron plumbers pipe. The actual diameter is 1.31 inches. A fellow Crossfitter told me that since he has switched to a 1.5" bar he no longer has issues with his elbows. Has anyone else had a similar experience? And if so, what is the correlation between thinner diameter bar and elbow pain?

Maybe on a thicker bar he was forced to use a thumb over grip where the thinner bar he was using a thumb around grip? I really have no idea tho and this is a wild guess...

That's about the only difference I can see a thicker bar making. That or the overall reps per set got smaller as his grip got fried by the fat bar?
