Re: cant do a pullup

practice, pullups are alot of work. Bands do help but can become a crutch. You need to do both. Both meaning that you do some set of negatives like 5 set 3 reps to start, then band them.

Also sup by doing arm strength exercises like pushups and...yes arm curls, strict press, bench press will all help.

Pullup negatives are good. Also anything that strengthens your lats - lots of different kinds of barbell or dumbell rows you can do.

Seriously though, what Jeff and Nik said will both help greatly with pullups. The strength you build combinded with any weight loss that happens will get you to doing pullups in no time. Just keep things simple, be persistent and patient.

For those at my box who cannot do pullups, we also work a lot of ring rows at varying angles. It helps teach them to keep their shoulders back in the proper engaged position, vs just dropping from a pull up.

YES, be persistent and patient. is it, you have to STAY at it, once a week or every other week is not going to cut it.

Re: cant do a pullup

I've been struggling for a pull-up myself after not making any progress with bands.

I decided to try a program. It's from a body builder but hey, a pull-up is a pull-up. And I found it's best to have something specific rather than trying a little of this and a little of that.

WFS: http://scoobysworkshop.com/pullups-for-total-beginners/

I've been at it for about 4 weeks now, working every other day. I'm working on phase 3 now. In that time I've gone from 1/4 of a pull-up to my mouth to the bar. I'll have that first one soon.

It may take some time but I'm determined to finally tackle this beast.

Agree with everything posted above, addition strength work will do wonders.

Best of luck.

How much weight?

The reason I ask is if you are way over weight you want to be careful how hard you work on pull-ups to avoid injury.

For my very high body fat folks we use bands to work the range of motion and focus on diet. Dropping weight will be by far the most important issue in body weight movement performance.
