How about: decathletes, running backs/safeties in football, special forces operators (I consider them athletes), sprinters?

IMO sprinters, gymnasts are the most fit, the latter being more prone to injury and chronic overuse due to exessively pushing the boundaries of natural joint ROM.

Decathletes are included as sprinters.

Adding more to the list would be mixed martial artists, capoieristas and anyone on steroids.

Wasn't this the same arguement that gave birth to the Iron man Triathlon?

Triathletes.

Just kidding.

I would like to see top Crossfitters work out with top Gymnasts, Sprinters, and Decathletes. It would be interesting who would be best at what, besides their areas of specialization.

I'm going to catch hell for saying this, but I can't imagine gymnasts being considered the most fit athletes. They are really strong for their size, but I wonder about their lungs. Would their gymnastic training alone allow them to run a decent 5K? I'm not saying the 5K is the ultimate test, but any definition of fitness would have to include cardio based activities and I don't know if their ultra brief bursts of activities (which I agree are amazing) would enable them to perform well in cardio events.

Wrestlers - and NO not the WWF kind.

Oh and Dave, yes, gymnasts have stamina to run, my girls run everyday and they're not even on the competitive team - THOSE athletes RUN!
