I bought some a couple of months ago at Lowes and the birch was around $40 while the sanded pine was around $30. However, prices do fluctuate often. Plywood was much more expensive after Hurricaine Katrina and occasionally goes on sale.

Re: Lifting platform finish

Hey guys

I'm a woodworker, too (a luthier -- I build acoustic guitars). I would sand to 80 and finish with a sealer at the least or a penetrating oil varnish at best, preferably Waterlox. Plywood or not, it just looks better and will protect it from the environmental effects of temperature, moisture, and humidity in a garage. I finish all my benches this way. 80 grit is just right for providing enough grip without feeling unfinished or rough.
