Re: Anthony and Jodi's Journal

Saturday, January 23, 2010

Anthony (M/31/165)

Squat
45x10
135x3
225x2
315x1
405x1
441x1 (opener)
474x1 (second, PR in competition)
507xF (third - got stuck in the hole)

Bench Press
45x10
45x10
135x3
185x1
225x1
255x1
275x1 (opener)
298x1 (second)
314x1 (third, PR in competition)

Deadlift
45x10
135x5
225x1
315x1
405x1
496x1 (opener)
551x1 (second, technical fault)
601xF (third, couldn't lockout)

First, the bad news. Everything was going well - nice hotel, weight was on track, felt good, relaxed. Went to sleep with no problems and around 3am all hell broke loose in the hotel. Someone had a medical emergency and the hotel manager panicked, screaming throughout the hotel trying to get 911 over there, etc, etc. Things settled down around 4am, but by then I couldn't get back to sleep. So not as rested as I could have been, but overall I still felt pretty good.

The good news is that we were much better prepared in a lot of ways. Better weight management, better food, better system for warmup, equipment, etc. Everything was just better overall.

My 441 opener was awesome - depth was spot on today. The 474 squat was slower than it should have been and I knew attempting a PR (507) was risky, but whatever, just for fun. Depth was AWESOME. Just couldn't get back up!

Bench press I was a little worried because of my wrist, but surprisingly it went really well. All lifts were solid - no issues with the wrist during or after. Very happy considering I was only planning on making the opener!

Deadlifts felt really good while warming up. Opener was fast. Second attempt was also extremely fast. Unfortunately when I dipped down to grab the bar my right hand ended up with a fist full of smooth - missed the knurling completely. It slipped in my fingers during the lockout (didn't drop it, just caused downward movement) , so it was a foul. It still felt good, so I was unfazed and attempted the 601. Got it up to the knee pretty fast, but then stalled and couldn't grind the lockout. It was probably my best attempt at 600+ so I'll take satisfaction in that at least.

Overall, it was a great day. I knew my lifts were a bit more aggressive this time and there was a good chance I'd miss a few. No disappointment at all. Ten weeks until Nationals and I'm confident I'll have a 500+ squat and 600+ deadlift by then.

Jodi (F/31/105)

Squat
45x5
95x3
135x1
165x1
185x1 (opener)
205x1 (2nd attempt)
220xF (3rd attempt)

Bench Press
45x5
65x3
85x1
105x1
125x1
125x1 (opener - yes I did it twice)
145x1 (2nd attempt)
155xF (3rd attempt)

Deadlifts
45x5
135x1
185x1
225x1
275x1
300x1 (opener)
315x1 (2nd attempt - National Record)
320x1 (3rd attempt - National Record)

Overall, a great day. I was still crazy nervous on squats. Tony said as soon as I touched the bar on my 3rd attempt he could see me trembling I was so nervous. haha! A couple of reasons for this...1) crappy sleep - I actually could not get to sleep and finally got a couple of good hours after the screaming event - but nothing before and 2) my body just doesn't want to lift heavy that early in the day.

Bench was good - I did my opener as a warmup set as well, just to be sure. Failed on the 3rd attempt but I'll use the same 2 excuses I used above.

Deadlifts were good. They felt heavier than I think they should have but I still got them. I decided not to get too aggressive on the 3rd attempt and went for 320 instead of the original 330 I had planned to do. Glad I did. So, on my 2nd attempt, I broke my old record, and on my 3rd attempt, I broke my new National Record....HOWEVER, I don't get to "claim" my lifts because of the 3 judges on the panel, only 1 was a National judge, you need 2. That kinda sucks but it's ok - it was still a great day and I can't wait to do it all again at Nationals in April.

I totaled 302.5kg for this meet, giving me Master's status. I was only 7.5kg away from Elite...if only I had gotten that stupid squat. haha!!

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone!! They mean a lot!!!

Speaking of which... I haven't noticed much conditioning work in your log lately. Are you planning to keep things that way until nationals or even indefinitely? Any chance you guys are going to be qualifying for the 2010 CrossFit Games?

Re: Anthony and Jodi's Journal

Great lifting, you two.

Hiccups aside, you're lifting some serious weight, and making us all proud. Can hardly wait for the report from Nationals.
