Paleo/Primal Post Workout Protein Shake

Hi All,

My trainer yesterday asked if I was doing any post-workout protein shakes, and currently I am not. The reason I am not is because I am trying to be very aligned with the paleo/primal diets and I wasn't sure if protein shakes aligned.

So my first question is do protein shakes fit with the paleo/primal diet?

If so what is the best brand (link would be appreciated) or kind of protein to use? I hope that any recommendations would taste good in just water so I can take it to the gym with me and just mix it up when I'm done with my workout.

Also would protein shakes be a big benefit to me if I try to eat with in 1 hour to 1.5 hours after my workout? This time frame depends on if I have to cook when I get home or have leftovers.

As always thanks for your help/suggestions!

Justin

If 'primal' includes dairy, then you can do the PWO shake that I do - 1.5 cups skim milk, 1 scoop whey protein and handful of frozen berries. Sorry, I do not know of any 'strict' paleo supplements...

Yes, I believe a shake would greatly benefit you with regards to muscle soreness and recovery.

Re: Paleo/Primal Post Workout Protein Shake

You could do egg protein powder and coconut water. Run a search for paleo post workout, you should find plenty of ideas. It's been discussed several times on the forum.

Do you have any recommended brands for egg protein? Or links that I can utilize to purchase?

Thanks!

Thanks!
Optimum Nutrition (ON) has a great 100% EGG protein powder. The issue is you might as well eat eggs as it's a fairly slow digesting product. I'd suggest using a whey isolate post workout for a faster absoption/utilization of the bcaa's which will help recovery. Since whey isolates are just a simple form of protein its not exactly as if you're drinking from the cows teets or anything and you can find zero fat and zero carb whey isolates fairly easy.

Re: Paleo/Primal Post Workout Protein Shake

Here's what I do:

1 cup SO Delicious coconut milk
1-2 scoops whey protein
1 tbsp Carlson's Very Finest Fish Oil (or flax oil if in a pinch)
1/2 c. unsweetened kefir (remove if going strict paleo)
1 c. blueberries
Ice

Awesome.
