Im just back from Inverness where I was watching the Masters Highland Games. One of the guys from the message board, Kevin Rodgers, is here and me and my wife managed to meet up with him and his family.

While there I was working out at a local gym with my wife, our friend who is a local and one of the girls that works in the gym.

The gym has a lot of big highland games athletes that train in it and they have a record board that has things like best farmers walk distance with 120kg in each hand, most reps with 170kg for deadlifts, large tyre flips for reps etc. I noticed they had a record for pull ups. It was 23.

It is now 35.

Although the body builders that were there as I was doing it tried to coach me afterwards because I was "Cheating" and that I "...should keep my body still to isolate my lats"

David nice work!

AHA HAHA HAHAHAHA, bodybuilders, what a laughable bunch at best! I usually finish, politely say thank you for the lesson and then ask them to try one simple kip, with good form. I haven't seen it yet! In fact for the most part they can't kip at all let alone with good form... It's the whole hip drive thing, they just can't do it.

Was the record for kipping pull ups or strict? 90% of the world outside of CrossFit and Gym Jones do not count kipping as proper pull up form.

I was going to suggest that you explain the virtues of the kip to the Weiderites, but have decided that it's best to just say, "Really? 'Cause that's how they taught me to do it in Ninja school."

Matthew, all it said on the board was pull ups but I knew before I started that it would be classed as cheating!

Remember...the proper response after you rip off a big set of kipped pullups and you're accused of "cheating" is:

"OK, why don't you get up there and beat me, using a kip".

You're likely to get exactly 0 takers.

Awesome! Would've loved to seen that in action!

Nothing like going to someone else's home turf and kickin' arse!

BTW, the added bonus about the ninja comment is they'll think you're either crazy or an extreme loser. Either way, folks leave you alone after that...
