Falling backwards during squat.

A lady that I train has always had problems going below parallel, she'll just lose her balance and fall down. She's young, 5'2 115lbs, and in great shape, strong lifts but just can't get a good squat. I've ruled out flexibility issues with her ankles, it seems to be that her hips give out. She said even when she was a kid she could never keep her balance.

Anyone else seen this? I don't know what to think of it.

Re: Falling backwards during squat.

Have you tried goblet squatting?

Maybe she has some odd anthropometry, levers and all.

I'm thinking maybe trying to let her hold the bottom of a squat while holding a set of rings or a pole, learning the balance and eventually lessening the dependence on the aid.

Re: Falling backwards during squat.

Can she control the decent? If not I would have her goblet squat to a medball until she can control the decent so she just touches the ball (not sitting on it or bouncing off it).

There is a small group of flexible folks who have issues with going too deep and not being able to control the decent.

Re: Falling backwards during squat.

I think Goblet Squats are a great idea.

What's her posterior chain strength like? If the goblet squats don't get you anywhere, you might hammer some box squats where she really works the hip hinge. Also just sitting in the bottom of a goble squat can help with flexibility and stability.

Re: Falling backwards during squat.

I don't see how falling backwards in the squat is possible without any ankle problems. Good ankle mobility should allow her hips to be directly above her feet, not matter her femur length.

How have you ruled out ankle mobility issues? The Pistol test?

Re: Falling backwards during squat.

I had an issue with this as well, correlate tests for ankles and hamstrings showed good flexibility. It ended up being my adductors, try checking that out.
