There is a punching dummy type looking object that a lot of asians in movies i have seen train with (jackie chan, bruce lee)...it looks pretty much like a big log suspended vertically with a pad in the upper area for punching and two "arms" sticking out...what is this called and any information would help on tips for constructing one.

This thing is called a "mook", and there are plans on the net on how to build one. This is not an easy task - you will have to be a very good woodworker to make one. One really good article seems to have gone, but here are some links:

- http://www.wingchun.org/text/misc/mook.html - this was the very good article that seems to be gone

These are other articles about making "dummies":

- http://alliancemartialarts.com/dummy.htm
- http://www.selfdefenseforums.com/for...ead.php?t=4094

Cheers,

Christian

Actually, I think it's called a wooden dummy. Unless mook is the term for some other country.

Jeremy, that actually isn't a bad idea. See once you go up to some guy and beat the crap out of him like you would a wooden dummy, you'll go to prison for assault, with or without a deadly weapon, you'll have as many guys to practice you wooden dummy techniques on, and you also get better a lot faster due to the reminder that if you mess up, your arse belongs to some other guy for the night. Of course the worst draw back of going to prison is, no bumpers or rings... can't say practicing my moves on an unlimited amount of men in prison is worth giving up my gym. (p.s. i've on meds right now so if I sound like an idiot, that's why)

Michael Janich, who is an excellent knife instructor, has a book on how to make a mook jong. His website is www.martialbladeconcepts.com. Look under the book and video link on the left of the page.

Myron, you're in luck because I made my own wooden dummy. Here's a link to how I did it: http://www.mccarriedesign.com/wooden_dummy/

Let me know if you have any questions.

hey Josh,

How do you know I am not already posting from Prison?

I just meant that I like to work 'hands on' with people. If you have absolutely nobody to work with, then a Mook Jong would be better than nothing.
