There's a great show on Discovery Travel channel called Living with Koumai. The Koumai are some of the last true hunter-gatherers on the planet. They are living today how our ancestors lived ten thousand years ago.
My observations: all are pretty ripped, very lean, hardly any body fat. Lots of walking, a little running, some fighting. Many of their activities require plenty of brute strength (moving things), but also agility.
Surprisingly, they don't have a preacher curl machine and they don't work their "tri's".
Check it out- it's interesting

I seen some hunter-gatherer women on TV the other night, and they were not very attractive.

That's a really good point, Neal, and I agree- the women weren't very attractive. But to each his own....

Neal,

What does this have to do with hunter/gatherer fitness?

Oh Kelly, you should of seen these ladies. The men for most part looked pretty fit, low body fat, good musculature, but the women actually looked kinda pathetic. They looked very weak with saggy muscles. Not at all what I would expect from people that were highly active. I though I would see more attractive athletic type bodies.

I think this is the same show I seen. http://travel.discovery.com/fansites/kombai/kombai.html (Warning: May contain hunter-gatherer nudity, so decide for yourself if its w/f safe)

Also, the children had distended bellies.

yeah, neal, still not getting the point. attractiveness is about perception.

and i think calling their women pathetic is unappropriate. that's bordering on insult, and not what these message boards are about.

Are the Koumai truly in shape and strong -- or are they just super lean? I know some homeless people in my neighborhood that are 'ripped' but it's not because they're strong, just because of their low bodyfat.

Which might explain the "attractiveness" issue that seems to be in debate here either -- if it's more a matter of lack of proper nutrition than fitness, the women might show that more than men in their body composition.

Maybe the men are significantly more active than the women.

Just a supposition; I haven't seen the show.

Whatever the reason is, I personally thought that the men had much more fit looking bodies, and hence more attractive bodies by western standards, than the women.

I mean, that's the a big part behind this hunter-gatherer stuff, isn't it? It's to be healthy, but also to have a good musculature and be sexually attractive. Good fitness for a male was a sign of a hunters cabability for protection and food procurement abilities, thus making them an attractive mate for females.

For example, I wish I was as fit looking many of those guys in the show. But if you're a women, I would probably stay away from trying to mimic anything they do, i.e., stick with hunter fitness, instead of gatherer.
