UC Berkeley drops gymnastics teams

Due to budget deficits, Cal has dropped several successful varsity sports from the athletic department.

Women's Lacrosse & Men's Baseball will not continue after the 2011 seasons. Incredibly, Rugby will be dropped to club status, despite winning 25 of the last 30 national NCAA championships. And perhaps of note to Crossfitters, men's & women's gymnastics will be eliminated as well.

From http://www.calgymnasticsforever.com/ (WFS):
The University of California Men’s Gymnastics Program has nearly a century-long history of athletic and academic excellence. The program was established in 1912, and has produced four NCAA Championship Team Titles, 29 Event Champions, 195 All-Americans, and 11 Olympians.

There's a donation campaign under way to preserve & endow the men's gymnastics team. I certainly think it would be appropriate to see "Crossfit Inc." or the Glassman's names on the donor list - as well as any other prominent Crossfit folks who have profited from the sport's wider interest as a result of its inclusion in the Crossfit methodology. Even to pledge just $1000 per year - the revenue raised by a single Level 1 participant - would help keep these UCBerkeley students practicing their sport, and their coaches employed.

Yes, Cal also dropped the rugby team, which has won more national championships than all other colleges put together.

Re: UC Berkeley drops gymnastics teams

The state of California has abandoned its university system, plain and simple. Gymnastics is far from the only program being cut. Rather than attempting to save individual programs one at a time, voters and alumni need to remind Sacramento that innovation economies need a steady influx of innovators -- which the UC system used to provide.

Katherine

Full disclosure: I do not live in CA, but do have an MS from UC Santa Barbara.

Wrestling has been taking a beating at the collegiate level within California for the last several years as well.

Cal-Davis cut their program this past year, and Cal-State Bakersfield nearly did the same.

Re: UC Berkeley drops gymnastics teams

I grew up in CA, I'm a UC graduate and I have to say I'm not surprised. California has been struggling for years. They were talking about closing their state parks not too long ago and not sure what happened to that. They need to fix their budget which they just can't do. It has been an ongoing problem and its not a recent problem.

I was sad to see that, but not surprised... UCSB dropped Football while I was a student there.

but we get to wear cool T-Shirts that say "Still Undefeated" -- an inside joke, for those in the know.
