Bizarre Exercise Pics Found at Local Gym

I train at the gym in a local technical college in northern Ukraine. In one corner of the gym there are a series of pictures of cartoonishly muscular men doing some of the strangest exercises I've ever seen. It kind of looks like something out of the USSR. I got a huge kick out of it and I thought some of y'all might as well. Enjoy:

Also, just to be clear, this is not an attack of the gym itself. The staff of the school and the director who runs the sportzal is super awesome to let me work out by myself and do CrossFit, even though they've never heard of it. I'm pretty sure they think I'm half crazy on most days. They're just super open to new ways of training and supportive of any effort to become fitter.

Sorry about that. Try again. Earlier the album had a limited setting. I made it public, so it should be accessible now.

Надеюсь, вам понравится.

Most of those aren't that bizarre. Some of them are pretty legitimate exercises and the rest of them are fairly standard isolation exercises. They just look different because gyms have big machines for almost every one of them now instead of having to find inventive ways to use free weights.

Not bizarre, just old fashioned. Straddle deadlifts, staggered squats, weighted pistols. As Matt said, most of these have been passed over as free weights gave way to machines.

And that style of illustration was very popular in the 30's-50's, check out some of the old York hand balancing courses.

Re: Bizarre Exercise Pics Found at Local Gym

I'd say it points to you simply being inexperienced. The first are standard neck harness exercises, along with neck bridges, to help improve neck strength. I'm guessing you didn't really play any impact sports, such as wrestling or football or rugby, where it really is beneficial in helping to reduce strain and injury.

Heading to the second picture:
-Top Left: Staggered Squat (or homostatic stance squat)
-Top Right: Sissy Squat - try a search on "Tom Platz" and "sissy squat", and you'll be able to see how well it can help quad strength and development (lots of related articles)
-Middle: Straddle deadlift - similar to a trap bar deadlift, placing the weight under you instead of directly in front
-Bottom Left: Weighted pistol squat, using the stripper pole for balance
No clue about the bottom right, lol. I'd have to see it in action.

Third picture are variations on leg extensions and leg curls. Keep in mind this would have been in use long before weight machines came along (if you could afford them). And there's a movement related to the adduction machine, on the bottom right.

4th should be easy enough - hack squats and leg presses. I think most people have seen pictures of Arnold Schwarzenegger on a vertical leg press.

On the calf page, the one you probably don't get are donkey calf raises, on the bottom left.
