I don't understand why people feel the need to cut fruit for weight loss unless they have already cut processed sugar, processed foods, grains, dairy, and alcohol AND still aren't losing weight. If someone is trying to lean out in a crazy way and has decided to limit carbs to under 100 grams a day, then sure, you probably have to cut fruit in order to do that.

But, no one ever got fat from eating fruit.
True dat. While fruit has more sugar than your average vegetable, I don't think people realize exactly how much one would have to consume to have a negative impact on their health...

Every time this topic comes up, I challenge the fruitophobes to produce a single individual whose excess weight or health issues can be blamed on excessive fruit consumption. So far no one has done so.

It's cherry season in Washington. I'll take yours if you don't want them, OP.

My favorite time of the year. Eating cherries til you're sick and can't move is definitely paleo.

Allergic to cherries? You poor thing... :-(

You might try visiting your local farmer's market instead of the grocery store, too. Fruit that was picked half ripe on the other side of the world usually doesn't have much taste.

Besides having fresher fruit, farmer's markets often have lots of different varieties, including heirloom varieties.

Re: is fruit mandatory on paleo?

Fruits, like most plants, are seasonal. You don't *need* them. And eating full fruit is much better than juice (ever tried eating the equivalent number of oranges that go into a large glass of OJ?!). If you're eating locally/seasonally, you'll naturally be limited in your fruit consumption.

I see them as a treat, like alcohol. Not forbidden, but not a staple either.

Of course, it helps that I'm allergic to half the fruits out there, it makes them easier to avoid

I have seen this. It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. (my boss went on a massive soup diet binge)

Re: is fruit mandatory on paleo?

One guy did a test where he went on a no-fructose diet (no juice, no fruit) and measured his cholesterol, LDL, albumin, and iron levels. He then changed his diet to have 14 ounces of OJ upon waking and before bed (so 28 ounces of juice per day) for a week and then measured his numbers again. Here's what happened:

Cholesterol: 203 -> 243
LDL ("bad" cholesterol): 127 -> 165

Albumin( renders testosterone inert): 4.3 -> 4.9
Iron: 71 -> 191

All the latter numbers are considered out of the healthy range. It never mentioned his weight oddly enough, but I think this shows that a high level of fructose intake can have a negative effect. So yeah, feel free to eat fruit, just don't have massive amounts everyday.
