Should colllege athletes get paid?

That was the question posed on my recent final for one of my classes - no worries I already took the final, so I'm not soliciting for answers. Please do not get political, but what do you think?

I'm a firm believer in the hope that there is still some amateurism out there that can be held on to.

Re: Should colllege athletes get paid?

that is a good question to bring up.. i feel that amateurs should not get paid "for the love of the game" or whatever the saying is.. the real problem is that many of the elite college athletes are given so much free stuff that they might as well be getting paid (ebay pays them atleast when they sell that free stuff hah)

Re: Should colllege athletes get paid?

Athletes generate far more revenue for a school than the cost of tuition. I don't think a stipend is out of the question.

Re: Should colllege athletes get paid?

Tuition= free
Equipment (workout stuff)= free
Living Stipend (at least at my alma mater) was ~ $900/ month and that was about 4 years ago.

That is a heck of a lot more than most people can ask for. Hell, I had to work two jobs to go to college (not that I'm complaining). Yeah they bring in millions as a team, but their main focus is supposed to be an education (try not to laugh at this one). I think they can wait until they make the pro' ranks, there is plenty of money to go around then.

I agree with you Jason, I put the same idea in my answer yesterday on the test.

Re: Should colllege athletes get paid?

Well said.

Here is a hypothetical for you:

I am on the All-Marine MMA/Pankration/Grappling team. It is all I do every day, as my job. I get my normal pay and benefits, they cover all my equipment, pay for all my trips and tournaments, etc.

Am I a professional athlete.

Re: Should colllege athletes get paid?

I would say you are a professional Marine, AND an athlete, but would you say you could reverse that? Professional athlete, then a Marine?

Re: Should colllege athletes get paid?

What about that Marine in the WEC? Is he a Marine, or an MMA athlete?

Don't know too many professional athletes that may be called to grab their A Bag, weapon, and head out with a one way ticket to insert prefixastan.

Re: Should colllege athletes get paid?

At most schools only 1 to 3 sports (usually Men's Football & Basketball) generate more revenue then expenses. All of the other sports are subsidized by the few profitable sports.

I am against for the following reasons:
1) If we started paying college athletes; we could see a decrease in the number of sports offered by schools because schools would need to use the profits generated by profitable sports to pay the athletes instead of supporting other sport programs.

2) Instead of a decrease, we could see an increase in the amount of freebies & under the table payments made to the elite athletes in the profitable sports. This could occur because the athlete payments would eliminate the stigma related to the secret payment of amateur athleles
