Crossfit and MMA training

I am pretty new to the boards and am trying to pick up as much info as possible.

I read with interest the thread about which MMA guys base their training programmes on Crossfit- Chuck Liddell, etc.

Given that Crossfit is "constantly varied functional movements executed at high intensity" (paraphrased) don't all MMA guys train using Crossfit, basically?

I can't imagine many of them, and certainly not the successful ones, sit around doing preacher curls.

Actually there's a video around of Rich Franklin doing a circuit with machines.

Re: Crossfit and MMA training

Oh man, I just found that video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cq7Kdv0RHmc (WFS) of Rich Franklin doing an HOUR workout without stopping using all machines. Now I'm by no means an MMA fighter, and Rich's record of 22-3 is very impressive, but a machine circuit workout? I'm very surprised at that, I definitely thought all professional fighters would be on some sort of Crossfitesque workout. I guess not.

I saw both BJ Penn and Jens Pulver doing curls on their countdown or bad blood episode. I'm sure more fighters than that do curls.

Re: Crossfit and MMA training

machines are very popular with pro atlete coaches because of the low risk of injury i know of a coupe of NFL teams that base their in season training around machines...... could be part of the reason that they are home watching instead of playing

Re: Crossfit and MMA training

The comment about NFL coaches using machines is interesting when compared to MMA guys. MMA guys wouldn't have an "in" season, technically, maybe they would use machines more as they begin to peak for a fight. Maybe that video of Franklin was when he was peaking for a fight?

Re: Crossfit and MMA training

Maybe he was peaking for a fight, I'm not sure. My next question would be; how well would Rich fare with a typical Crossfit workout like Fran, Helen or Elizabeth?

Re: Crossfit and MMA training

I reckon if Franklin, or any MMA guy for that matter, couldn't get a good time on a benchmark Crossfit workout like one of the girls, or a Hero workout, you'd have to question the suitability of Crossfit for MMA training. But I strongly suspect they would have good times.

Re: Crossfit and MMA training

Their times on the workouts don't really matter to them. They are still going to be beating people up with or without it. Even if they got a bad time.
