This is the second time box jumps have bitten me....first I broke bones in my left hand doing box jumps (yes, I'm very uncoordinated sometimes) and today I missed landing feet first on top of the box and attempted to land using my right shin and kneecap instead. Leg below the knee is impressively huge, bloody, full of interesting bruises and it's downright painful.
I think I'm going to rename this WOD "Kelly's Demise"....:-) |

If it's any consolation, I did my best to follow in your footsteps tonight, slipping on the benchtop, falling forward, and just about smashing my face on the GHR. :uhoh:

Yep, I think this WOD deserves a more sinister name...Glad you missed the GHR; it's got way too much hurt potential. Given my painful box jump history, I was definitely worried about paying that rock-solid piece of equipment an unexpected visit during PMS III.

If I'd hit it, at least I'd have an excuse for my terrible (but consistent) time on the WOD!

New name? Maybe "Yllek". Captures the intent and the spirit.
I came way too close to blowing out a box jump and doing a face plant at the YMCA today. People already watch me to see what freaky thing I'm going to do next. That would have made their day. When I work out with a serious WOD at the Y and people obliquely stare, I call it "The Silence of the Treadmills". |

Kelly,
Ouch. My "boxes" are actually concrete blocks (the kind they use to build houses). Stacked three-high, it comes out very close to 24". Anyway, the problem is that the edges are sharp, and if you miss a jump, your shin ends up scraping down the edge, pushed along by your full bodyweight. Reminds me of skinning fruit. Anyone have any easy way to cover the edges? I tried duct-taping a washcloth on the edge but it doesn't stay on very well. |

I don't know how permanent your cinderblock set-up is, but you might consider spray-on foam insulation. Home Depot. A little goes a very long way. Might have to re-apply after a few bad landings, but it would still be a whole lot easier than stitches. Mike Donnelly |

I caught knee doing this one on a retaining wall. Didn't notice the blood until the dogs seemed concerned.

Great idea! My setup isn't permanent (I deconstruct it after each workout they are used in), but I could dedicate one block as the "all-time top block" and keep spraying on the foam as needed. |

Another thought might be to get the foam insulation (round, hollow) used for water pipes. You can pick it up at Home Depot in a variety of sizes. It's split down the middle, so you could wrap the edge of the brick/block, and probably use some silcone adhesive to secure it.
