As a vegetarian

I have been a vegetarian for over 3 years now, and seem to have found a decent balance of veggies, pastas, legumes, etc...

I have only been doing crossfit for approximately two weeks now (ouch...still), but I would like to incorporate my lifestyle healthily.

Does anyone have a diet plan they are working with that is vegetarian friendly?

I do not eat seafood as some vegetarians do, but I will eat milk, eggs, and cheeses.

Thanks!

Re: As a vegetarian

There are already some big threads that deal with this topic. Try doing a search; they are not hard to find.

The short answer is: Meat is more ideal.

The other short answer is: If you're determined to stay vegetarian (fine by me), then follow all of the guiding principles of other healthy CrossFitters. Stay away from processed foods as much as you can, even if they're vegetarian.

Other than that, Zone is a fine vegetarian diet, although it does take a bit more work. Zone is a great diet regardless of what you eat.

Re: As a vegetarian

Hey Mario,

I'm vegetarian and I've been CF'g for 3 months. I've been vegetarian all my life and I don't eat eggs either. I don't have a problem following the zone at all. All my protein comes from cheese, cottage cheese, tofu, tempeh (absolutely delicious). All my carbs come from fruits and veges. Fat from nuts and olive oil. No problem at all in doing zone and being vegetarian. If you go to CFJ #21 and download the list of zone-friendly food, and the mealplans, you'll find all the info you need. They even have meal plans which include vege options.

Welcome aboard Mario.

I am from the St. Louis area as well (Illinois). Vegetarian too, though I eat dairy (including eggs) and once in awhile fish. Not the strictist one am I...

start reading some zone stuff...and modify it. There are tons of threads on it. Download the free journal articles and try to pick up a used copy of Barry Sears' "Soy Zone"...and then just throw it all in a blender with the stuff you know that works and you'll get a great diet.

I used to be a veg. If I were to do that again (never say never) I would try out the Thrive Diet by Brendan Brazier. Google it.

Good book even if you're not veg.

Re: As a vegetarian

I've discovered Greek Yogurt. The nutritional profile is very different from other Yogurts... it's high in protein, low in carbs. I think Fage is the brand sold around here. Also, Balance bars are an option when you're in a hurry. They're a balanced 2 block snack.

New to this myself... good luck!

These contain "fish gelatin," so depending on your flavor of vegetarian...
