Fast 400 meters

Fifty-eight seconds is a not bad for a 400 meter run. But what if it's the last 400 of a 1600 meter race? This video is awesome:

What if it's the last 400 of a 10,000 meter race?

Then it must be a 56 second lap, of course! Holy crap, that looked fast!

Re: Fast 400 meters

That is called dropping the hammer, and it is awesome.

While most of the crowd may have laughed at the high school kid running the mile and thought he miscounted laps, I'm sure anyone who followed distance running was not laughing and knew that kid would win the race before it started. You don't run a 4:04 mile in high school and go unnoticed. The only race was for 2nd place. The kid who dropped the hammer with 600m to go just planned his race that way and nobody even tried to go with him knowing they could not keep up.

I saw a similar race in Florida, sitting in the crowd, and guys in front of me were wanting to take bets on who was going to win. They were there following some sprinters. They laughed at me when I told them the little hispanic guy, especially when he was in last place at the 800m mark. Little did they know he had not lost a race that year and had signed a scholarship to run for the University of Arkansas. As planned, he then went to the front and crushed the field on the last lap and nobody even tried to go with him.

With the 10,000m runner, going for an American Record, those lapped runners need to learn to get the heck out of his way. He shouldn't have had to go to the outside to get around them. When you are getting lapped you need to move to the outside to let the leaders go by unimpeded.

Re: Fast 400 meters

I ran a 56 once. It was the last 400 meters of a 400 meter race.
