Re: Eugene's Birthday Pullup Challenge Approaches

Check it out, I'm replying to me from about a year ago!

I got the 49 reps (pr) on 4/29/09. So now I've been trying to
train for 50 on 11/27/09...I have been chasing the big 50 since Eugene's
50th birthday about 4 years now, even though I don't think he posts anymore, I thinks he's turning 54 this year?

Any takers?

PS - I find that progressing over time from 3 sets of 15 with 1-minute rest
up to 3x20 w/1-min, then keep after 3x18 and compressing the rest
time down to eventual 30 secs. got me the 49, and I could not have done
another pullup. I followed this over about six weeks, 3-4 times per week in the spring.

Re: Eugene's Birthday Pullup Challenge Approaches

Good memory James...but off by a year. I turn 54 this year and I have been struggling with pullups lately because of a shoulder injury. Though I can get by with a palm facing grip with my right hand, it still hurts at the bottom of the kip so I am limited to 25 or 30 and then it just hurts too much to continue. Thank you for continuing the event, a good as any time of the year to up the pullup numbers.

Good to know you're out there still. In spirit anyway. Have a Happy Birthday
by the way if I don't see again before then, ha.

Get well soon.

Re: Eugene's Birthday Pullup Challenge Approaches

Okay, so I'm warmed up ready to
give this a go...waited a couple
days since last round of pullups,
hoping to feel better, no luck, fighting
some subliminal flu crud.

I'm feeling serious pregame nerves; I know this is
a serious long-shot from the start, and the
attached requisite Angie is gonna add the
proverbial injury to insult....

...be right back.

Re: Eugene's Birthday Pullup Challenge Approaches

I just ran across this thread. I have been aiming for 48 pullups on 6/7/2010, my 48th birthday. I'm at only about 20 consecutive now, so I really have my work cut out for me.

Any training regimen hints? I'm trying to do one rep max pullups after the warmup but before the WOD (assuming there are no pullups in the WOD).

Re: Eugene's Birthday Pullup Challenge Approaches

I love that...only 20 pullups. In what other community of athletes is 20 pullups a number you lament because it isn't particularly high among your peers. Crazy.

Yes, much to do. One of your potential failure points will be your grip. When the numbers get big and start going north of 35 or 40, that will be a lot of time spent on the bar. Be sure you are pushing away from the bar so you don't take your bodyweight load all at once. You want your arms to be straight as soon as possible when you push away and not go straight and load up with your weight all at once. Separate grip work is good but so are bar hangs, farmer's walks and grippers.

Do submaximal sets throughout the day but also try multiple sets of moderate rep sets. Say 8 to 10 or so and do 10 sets alternating your grip, using a towel any kind of trick you can think of for variety.

Good start there.
