Did Ryan today as my 3rd ever CF and was discouraged...

I tried the beginner version over at Galattin CF....

Beginner:
3 Rounds
3 Muscle up Progressions
5 Burpees

I did muscle up subs (3 pull ups/3 dips) for each MU and then the burpees.

I could only do 2 MU subs for each round...

So I would do 3 pull ups...3 dips....3 pull ups...3 dips... and then the burpees. Then rest for a couple of minutes and repeat.

It bothers me that I can't even do the MU subs for the required reps.

Everyone has to start somewhere. If you're doing unassisted pullups and dips, you're already ahead of lots of people. (Such as me.) Keep up the good work!

Well, you start where you start. I started CF about 2.5 weeks ago. In about 1 week and a half the amount of MUs I could do increased by 50-60%.

You should be encouraged by the fact that you started CF. Believe me, if you eat right, you will be noticing improvements day by day, week by week. You will even notice it while you sleep.

Just realize that you are not at the competetive stage yet, and should not be comparing yourself to others who are in prime shape. Compete against your old self and you will want more.

Echoing above... I did the 3 reps of 7 MU (high assist (rings above shoulders)) and 21 burpees and it SUCKED. I've been doing these things for about 7 months, but had a stretch this spring where I was not able to work out due to a shoulder injury, so it's been hard the last few weeks.

You will improve. In January, I could not manage more than 1-3 ring dips.

Ok so next time this workout comes around....

Should I try the MU subs again and just try to get more of them in? (3 pull ups / 3 dips for each MU)

The next time this workout 'comes around' might be tomorrow or in 2yrs time...there really is no way to tell. There is no way to tell how fit you'll be by then. Thus there is no point planning, IMHO.

Plan for today's workout, not tomorrow's

I would keep it the same. I mean you were able to do the subs, you just had to scale it more than you would have liked. No reason to try anything easier next time IMO. If this workout comes up again then you could either try to go for more, or try to be faster. Either way you're getting better. Honestly though if you just keep the faith, follow the programming, and push through your frustration you'll be surprised at where you end up and in how short a time. And it might sneak up on you. You might think you're still sucking, but something like this comes up again and you blast right through it and that's when you'll be like "huh. i guess it is working."

Everyone has to start somewhere so keep your head up, this was the first excercise I did including muscle ups and it took me 38 minutes. There are people on beyond the whiteboard recording 13 minute times... Just stick with it, with a lot of hard work and determination you will eventually be doing Muscle ups instead of subs and hopefully I will be much closer to the sub 20 minute times

At the risk of a Me Too post: When I first decided to start Crossfit, coming up for 3 years ago, I couldn't even do a scaled back version of the warm up. 2 rounds of: 5 push ups, 5 sit ups, 5 squats, 5 supermen + a samson stretch each side, would take me about 15 minutes and I'd be wrecked!
