Increased Sexual Urges???

Ive been crossfitting for a few months now, made amazing results, I train every WOD and then on some days train different sports in the evening. Now

Is my sex drive supposed to of gone through the roof? I cant even look at a woman now without feeling horny lol. Would this be something due to increased testosterone from all the training? (Dont know is that happens but just a theory)

Its even worst when after the WOD I go to the cold shower and end up getting in the jacuzzi with gym bodied girls lol

Re: Increased Sexual Urges???

Okay, this thread has the potential to get out of hand and locked fast, but I think it's actually worth a bit of reasonable discussion. Certainly one of the basis ideas behind lifting heavy with compound lifts is that it produces a strong neuroendocrine response resulting in hormone secretion. I don't think it's beyond the pale to suggest that one effect of the increased hormone secretion might be increased sexual response. Shortly after starting my SS cycle I experienced an episode of testicular vasocongestion (er... "blue balls"), which I hadn't dealt with in about two decades.

Of course, there may be other reasons and it all could be illusory. But if we can keep the conversation mature, and also avoid "ZOMG CF IS TEH NEW VIAGRA" comments--any medical truth to this sort of thing?

Re: Increased Sexual Urges???

I last experienced this sort of increase in sexual appetite when I was about 17 training for competitive powerlifting and going through puberty lol.

But at 24 surely my hormones shouldent be going crazy without some sort of external stimulation. ie Training like a mofo lol

I dont think its illusory as my sex drive just shot up and I can only narrow it down to crossfit, I am zoning as well if thats adds to maybe adding an explanation to why.
Id like to know if anyone else has had this.

Re: Increased Sexual Urges???

Yes, there is a testosterone response to strength training. The number of test receptors goes up in response to increased muscle demands, so available test gets vacuumed up faster. The HPTA responds by increasing secretion of FSH, which stimulates the Leydig cells to produce more test.

By the way, this response is not age-dependent so men in their 50s and 60s will see an increase in test through strength training. A 50 y.o. man doing heavy lifting will not return to test levels he had in his 20s but there will be a significant increase. Because levels will not go through the roof, the older man will not experience the full range of effects from high test levels, but response to test levels is linear so any increase will probably result in noticeable changes.

Re: Increased Sexual Urges???

A good diet provides optimal amounts and quality of building blocks for optimal hormone production. A good workout and good recovery helps hormone production. It sounds like you have your diet exercise and recovery in excellent harmony.

I usually get it after I have take a couple day break or after a light week. This shows that I am having some minor recovery issues.

Victor, thanks for setting a tone for the thread (or, yeah, it would have gone down).

Lower levels of body fat also have the effect of lowering estrogen and raising testosterone levels, which I'm sure you've experienced (lower body fat) due to strict zone and crossfitting.

All of these responses make sense. I'll add that there is an overall sense of wellness and increased strength and fitness that brings out the aliveness in us. The sex drive is one of several ways this manifests. Functional fitness has many forms.
