Question Brown Rice?

I live in Japan and just about every meal is served with white rice. I know white rice is completely out of the question. Is brown rice a go? Yes or No.

Re: Brown Rice?

Depends on who you ask. It is ok on zone, just make sure you measure it, but def a no on Paleo.

A no for me personally.

Thanks for the input Brian.

I was thinking in moderation would probably be Ok. I'm just trying to convince (brainwash) my wife into joining me on my quest for fitness. She told me that because she’s Japanese, she wasn’t going to give up rice. So I was thinking that the alternative of Brown would be good. This whole no rice thing makes me kind of wonder though. I mean, over here, almost everyone eats a decent size bowl of (white) rice with every meal. There sure aren’t a lot of fat people walking around here. I also thought that carbs were one of the bodies’ primary sources of energy. This has me questioning certain diet paths that we, as CrossFitters, follow.

Re: Brown Rice?

Well, all i can say is try it, if it works for you, stick with it.

As far as fat people over there; I'm not Mr. Travel or anything, but it's my understanding that people in other countries also eat much smaller portions then in the US, much less processed food/sugar, etc. So, although the rice might be "bad" according to CF, I'm sure other good diet things are going on over there; like eating lotsa fish. I'm sure the rice is less processed too.

Re: Brown Rice?

If you want to know more about the rice and china thing there is a nutrition book called the China Study that explains all about it. It turns out that the average person in china eats more calories per day than the average american (corrected for weight). They stay skinny. As do most people in asia. All while eating rice. Their secret? They don't eat processed food and they don't eat a ton of animal products.

The glycemic index of brown rice is much lower than white so although its not paleo it won't spike your blood sugar and should work to keep the weight off. Try it eat no processed foods, no refined sugars and you should get and stay skinny.

Re: Brown Rice?

All,

Again, thanks for the inputs. I have lived over here for nine years and have noticed that the all of processed foods that I was eating are no longer part of my diet. I also eat fish about four meals a week, my wife even more. I like brown rice and have made that switch about a year ago. As of the first I have been doing a semi strict Zone. Limiting myself to just a little bit of rice once a week. I have noticed a difference too. I have lost nine pounds and have noticed that my shoulders have gotten more toned, my stomach tighter and quite a few other changes. I bet cutting out the amount I was drinking helps. I think I will try to go Paleo in March. I'm really digging CF and the CF community.

This is very interesting and counterintuitive for me, and I suspect for the largely Taubes-friendly community here. Does anyone know more about this or speak in detail about the information therein?

Well I could, but that answer could really be applied to any question asked anywhere on this board and kind of eliminates the point of a "discussion" board. I polled the group because I know the general thoughts of the personnel and the education / competence of some noteworthy posters.

Re: Brown Rice?

I posed a sort of similar question a couple of weeks ago about brown rice, and I'm glad to see other people wondering about it.

I just decided today to add it back into my diet occasionally, because this no-grains thing is not working for me. Since I started cutting them out while doing Crossfit regularly and dancing, I'm hungry all the time, which isn't normal for me. I don't need large portions to feel full. But, because of some chronic health issues, I've had to cut a lot of foods from my diet anyway in recent months, so it's very hard to find foods I can actually eat. No dairy. No butter. No red meat. Absolutely no sugar or honey (don't miss those, though - sugar makes me feel nauseous and weak). No soy. No gluten. I can't function on nothing but fish, vegetables, and chicken. I realize that I need the occasional brown rice or buckwheat. I think this paleo thing works better for people who don't have the kind of restrictions I have.
