Shoulder stability in kipping pullups

So I have started getting my kipping pullups finally, thanks to the Adrian tutorials. My question is how to progess with this, as it is a bit brutal on my shoulders (actually, on my left shoulder). I pretty much am thinking to just give it a day or two between sessions, and maybe add in some ring rows to help with the stabilization? I can hit cycles of 3-6 in a row at this point.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Craig

Go easy with this if you're feeling pain. I don't have proof, but I think learning to kip is what landed me on the operating room table this week with a tear!

Theresa, thanks for posting this. I've just started learning to kip, and I do it very poorly. It's ironic because I can do strict pull-ups. It is a jolt to the shoulders to have that "pop" up at the top. My shoulders have been gradually healing, but, the kip attempts hurt, and it was not a "good hurt". As Steven Low recommends: "Never work through pain". With each attempt, a picture of Steven pops up at the top of the pull-ups bars.

Re: Shoulder stability in kipping pullups

I was in the same boat...I could do several dead hangs, so I tried to take it to the next level. It's quite a jolt to the shoulder joint when you're just learning to kip, and I felt pain. I also think I compensated for tendinitis I'd had in the opposite shoulder. Controlled movements are the key to learning the kip safely.

Be careful!

Re: Shoulder stability in kipping pullups

Focus on keeping active shoulders next time. This can be practiced with just the kip at the bottom first and then a couple of consecutive. Drop down if you know you're gonna jerk at the bottom to save your shoulders.

Stay away from pain.... yeah.

Re: Shoulder stability in kipping pullups

Thanks, Theresa, and thanks, Steve. Just after my bad attempts, I rememberd the active shoulders part. I'll just go back to the strict ones for a while till I'm out of the woods. I'm trying to deal with bursitis, possible tendonitis, and trigger points. Don't know the exact source yet. Just that if it hurts, I go back to low body only.

P.S. Thankyou, Craig for this specific shoulder thread. You may have helped yourself, and others in the same boat. (or concept 2 rower)

Re: Shoulder stability in kipping pullups

I've been having some unexplained left shoulder pain as well for about a week. I thought it was KB swings but now I'm thinking it might be pullups. I have noticed I'm cutting my down swing short (not full extension) which I assume I'm doing to try to protect that shoulder. It is strange though because nothing I do creates any acute pain, but it is definitely injured.
