Drug Testing at the Regionals ?

Is there drug testing at the Regionals?. I think at the very least all of the athletes who go to the games plus 3-4 who finish after them should be tested

Some of the women in crossfit now, wow they have as much muscle as some men !

I personally don't like the way the 'games favouring the stronger athletes' is leading to top female crossfitters becoming less and less feminine (not all, just some)

Re: Drug Testing at the Regionals ?

The word on the street at the North Central regionals is that the top teams and top individual athletes were immediately escorted frim the event floor to do a drug test after the final heat of the final event. Looked like the top 6 individuals were required to do so, not sure if it was the same number of teams.

I am not an competitor so this might not be totally correct, but that's what some of my group and I heard this afternoon.

Re: Drug Testing at the Regionals ?

It's probably something HQ is not going to pay for unless the athlete at least makes Regionals, has a sponsorship or wins money in a CF event (such as the open or some other regional comp like the SC throwdown). Those tests cost well in the hundreds to thousands of dollars, especially the one that Froning was put through, the labwork on that one likely cost at least a grand to conduct, not including travel time for the nurse obtaining the sample.

But those athletes did make it to the games phase, thus HQ is paying their way to Cali (or at least allowing them in to the comp for free), so it then becomes worth it to conduct the drug testing.

Re: Drug Testing at the Regionals ?

I Judged at North Central. All qualifying athletes were immediately drug tested before the podium.

As we all know, Crossfit is continually evolving. We are becoming stronger and if we're not challenging ourselves, it contradicts the purpose of our methodology. The Open, Regionals, and Games are that test of fitness. I can only hope it will continue to surprise us each and every year. The athletes that we Judged at North Central were incredible and it was very clear they have put their heart & souls into their training. They definitely earned their spots!

Re: Drug Testing at the Regionals ?

Amy it's very true

But athletes who use performance enhancing drugs are not lazy talentless bums that we would like to think they are

E.g. Tyson G*ay is one of the most talented athletes in the history of the United States but was looking to catch one of the history of the earth's genetic freak;s in Usain Bolt.

As the rewards in crossfit grow bigger and bigger, more and more great athletes will be training harder and harder with the possibility of no reward which makes the temptation to get that tiny edge to push them over the line stronger and stronger.

We would like to think it is not the case but the history of every other physical performance based sport says otherwise (and the Russians and Chinese haven't even gotten their mitts into crossfit yet )

It is good that Crossfit is setting the drug testing standard solidly for the sport.

Urine tests are not that expensive but blood tests are.

PWA had to pay about $750 per test for their Youth qualifying world meet earlier this year.

I was one of those athletes - I think you judged my team at one point (muscle-up workout). I was pretty impressed with the judging all weekend, the standards were held high for all of us and I didn't see a lot of stuff sliding through.

It's not a beauty contest.

Jenni - thank you for the comment. I did have a twin (not literally; just another woman with my same haircut) who also Judged, so it could have been either of us! My Judging experience this year was incredibly rewarding; all athletes were gracious & extremely respectful; it can get crazy out there and it is our top priority to keep communication clear & the movement standards consistent for all of you. Glad to hear that was your experience. Congratulations on competing at Regionals - you have a lot to be proud of!

Re: Drug Testing at the Regionals ?

I was assigned to escort one of the top 3 team's male members & one of the top 3 athletes at Central East last weekend. From the time they complete the last event until they take their drug test, they cannot leave their escort's sight. Teams have to keep all six members together the entire time, until they take the men/women separately for their drug tests.

For teams the order of things was a little different from the men's, since the men's event was the very last one. Teams went straight back to start drug testing after the events, but the men had some other media items they completed before doing drug testing (including the podium ceremony). Again, they never left the escort's sight.

For teams, one male & one female are randomly selected for testing, but for individuals all three are tested. Drug testing was done via urine sampling, by a doctor (no, I didn't watch, or hold the cup).
