Double Unders and Breathing

This might sound like an odd question but when doing double unders, when do you inhale and exhale?? Doing Annie today, I would get 4-5 DU's and then have to stop. What I finally realized was that I was concentrating so hard on what I was doing that I kept forgetting to breathe. Oops! I do this with running and push ups as well.

Anyone else out there do this and how do you counteract it?

Re: Double Unders and Breathing

Louise, you should be able to find a rhythm where your breathing matches the activity. Like inhale for 3 jumps, exhale 3 jumps. Any high rep activity could be approached the same way, matching breaths to strides for running, jumps, for box jumps and throws for wall balls.

It should become sort of meditative when you find a good tempo.

Re: Double Unders and Breathing

Thanks for the reply...I figured out last night that when I tighten up my core, my brain starts freaking out thinking I can't get enough oxygen and my breathing all goes to heck...probably why I haven't been progressing for a while!! Doh!! I never thought I would have to stop and think about my breathing in order to get stronger!

I do so love Crossfit, it teaches me new things and I have the confidence to achieve them!

Re: Double Unders and Breathing

why would you tighten your core on double unders? I try to be as relaxed as possible when I do them, double unders are nice once you get efficient at them

I tighten my core with push-ups and lifts more so than double unders. DU's I seem to just forget to breathe because I am concentrating so hard on the technique!
