Front squats... where do you feel it?

I was lifting with my friend Kate and we were discussing where we felt the 'burn' from our 5 sets of 10 reps FS. Kate always feels it in her glutes and I always feel it in my quads.

We were trying to decide if it really made a difference where we 'thought' we felt the burn as long as we both had good form.

Just looking for opinion (and yes, I am 99.9% sure we both have excellent form... Kate is stronger than I am, but we both are sticklers for good form).

Thanks so!

Karin

You should feel it in both because FS uses both fairly extensively.

If you're feeling one more than the other than it's probably because:

1. You're hitting the weaker muscle in the chain more which is good

2. The other one is inactivated (such as inactivated glutes -- for example from a desk job) and you need to shore up that weakness to get them working again right.

I think we both probably do feel it in both, its just where we feel it most is very different :-)

ALL SQUATS are HIP movements, not knee movements. You should feel them PRIMARILY in the GLUTES and HAMSTRINGS regardless of type.

If you feel them in the quads, you are focused on extending the knees or even worse, not actively contracting the hamstring on the way down to depth.

1) My focus is on exploding up with the hips... so I don't think that is the problem.
2) Is it possible to not actively contract the hamstrings and still have good form?

must be doing something minute to mess up the exercise...

Re: Front squats... where do you feel it?

Sure, is your focus on the hips UP or to the front??

You must pull with your hamstrings against your upturned rear to drive the hip forward

Quads are primarily there for knee stabilization, not "lifting".

without an example I would say you are proably not moving your hips backward enough as you pull yourself down. Rather you are using the quads to control the speed.
