Pull up bar/ Squat rack bracket?

Im going to build a pull up bar in my back yard out of 12' 4x4's. Im going to have two 4x4's dug into the ground then set with concrete, then a bar going across. What I want to do is use it as a rack for squating. Where can I buy the metal bracket to hold the bar? Also what width should I set the 4x4's from each other?

thanks- Matt

Re: Pull up bar/ Squat rack bracket?

The beams should be no wider than 44" apart as an outside dimension. I think most squat racks have an outside measurement of 42".

I don't have an answer for you for the bracket.

wander around the hardware store and find something that would meet your needs.
Another option would be to buy some actual J hooks and modify to mount to the 4x4

Rogue is selling their J-cups on discounted price ($40 for a pair)-check the closeout items, not sure about the dimension!

Don't bother with trying to find a metal bracket or jcup. Just continue on with the wood construction as shown in this picture:

maybe you can try these.
put a hole in the 4x4 where you want the jcups and put these in there.

Re: Pull up bar/ Squat rack bracket?

What about just getting a large bolt and screwing it in? The bolt threads may not be the best on the bar knurling, but it shouldn't matter as long as you're not snatching with the bar. Maybe angle it up a couple degrees too. If you need a height lower for bench just screw 2 sets in at different heights.

Michael's idea isn't too bad.
if your worried about the bar you can also just put electrical tape around the bolts.

To quote Mark Rippetoe, "I wouldn't use a wooden squat rack for the same reason I wouldn't buy a wooden car."
