I can't do a false grip.

The problem is that I will set the grip, but as soon as I go down into the pullup position the grip returns to the normal overhand position.

I am not using ring but either a pullup bar or wooden swing set.

I have read Coach Sommer's and Tyler's article on the grip, but can't figure out what is wrong.

Any help?

Try keeping your arms bent for a while. The hardest part to hold the false grip is at the bottom, especially on bars, since you can't turn them out.
As you get better, you will eventually be able to maintain the false grip through the whole ROM.
