Much weaker after abs injury

Hello everyone,

Last week was my first time being in the gym for about 4 months. I hit a WOD on Monday and Wednesday with no problems but on Thursday I stupidly did a workout that involved (among other things) 100 GHD sit-ups. I was so sore the next few days that I could barely walk.

This week my pain is gone, but I'm finding I can't do even the simplest abs exercises. There's no pain, I just am physically unable to, for example; do a single sit up.

Should I be worried?

Thanks!

Isn't the bodies defense mechanisms marvelous.

give it time, and in the meantime be aware that your lower back is not getting the bracing support it used to..

Re: Much weaker after abs injury

Wait, what? You were off for four months and then decided to get back into things with 100 GHD sit-ups? No offense, but that is a terribly stupid idea. You could've induced a low level rhabdomyolysis very easily, damaging the contractile ability of your muscle. Keep working the abs, but tone it down to your own level (not 100 GHDs). Hopefully you didn't permanently lose strength, as is seen in many individuals who suffer from rhabdo.

You haven't been pi$$ing brown have you? If so you need to get checked out. If not you luckily avoided rhabdo, but you did some damage to your muscles that will take a while to recover from. Ease your way into things from here on out and you'll be fine.

Re: Much weaker after abs injury

You destroyed a bunch of muscle fibers.

Even if you did or didn't have rhabdo (confirmed by brown urine as obviously said) it's gonna take the body months years depending on how bad the damage is to regenerate the muscle fibers and get the strength back up.

Start slow... do light work. Then move into strength work.

AVOID ANY AND ALL HIGH REPETITION EXERCISES TO THE ABS.

Be warned, rhabdo can come without the coke colored urine. be wise.

Re: Much weaker after abs injury

I read up on rhabdo and convinced myself I don't have it... guess I got off easy.
As for recovery I really hope it's not years. I'll take it easy and try to slowly build back the strength.

Thank you very much for the advice everyone! This site is an amazing resource.

Re: Much weaker after abs injury

I have the exact same symptoms from 125 GHDs last week! I'm actually in the ER right now with a bit of rhabdo… getting IV treatments. My abs aren't sore anymore but I can't even do one situp! Have you recovered yet? I wonder how long it'll take. Either way, doc says no crossfit for a week

Probably no CF for a lot longer than that. You suffered a serious musculoskeletal injury - it's going to take months to recover.

My God, you just liquified your muscle fibers and you'd seriously consider returning to the same workout program that caused it within a week? Do you honestly believe you'd make any gains? You do realize that's the muscular equivalent of trying to run a marathon on a freshly-broken leg, right?
