Re: Susie's Recovery Log

Thanks, guys.

Yesterday was a "one-step-back" day. I couldn't pull on the rower without hurting my neck, so I stopped. I managed only 10 minutes on a stationary bike, then did a few rounds of squats and a few situps. That's ok....second day back in the gym. My "official" prescription for activity right now is "work up to a mile of slow walking."

I have a game plan for my sojourn in the globogym today. We'll see....hopefully I'll be able to get more done today.

Susie

That's more than 80% of people in this country will do today. Good job.

Susie, Gant said it GOOD! Remember this game of LIFE is a long and well thought out plan. There is no need to rush it. I think of the motto--BE PREPARED! Slow and steady winds the race...

Re: Susie's Recovery Log

Thanks, Sarena... Any word on new grandbaby yet?

Today was a little better. Went to horrid globogym and did 20 min. hill program on the bike, got my HR up (too easily) and dealt with the frustration of having the resistence cut out from under me on the climbs.

Then I did 3 rounds of 10 reps each:

bench press w/ 5 lb. DBs
body rows on the Smith machine
declined situps
front squats w/ 5 lb. DBs

Not exactly "for time" but I did push through efficiently as I could. Had to rest a lot.

I'm exhausted. My legs are twitching. I can't tell if it's fatigue or neuro symptoms, but I feel better mentally than before I exercised. Some young schmuck saw me climb on the steepest declined situp bench---closest thing to a GHD situp I could do---and suggested I do crunches instead. I smiled prettily and said, "Thank you, I'll be fine." Then he just stood there and watched me. Schmuck. Just because I'm not young and I'm wearing a cervical collar doesn't mean I can't do stuff!

Susie, you said it right! That's an important quote! If you're wearing a cervical collar, you probably truly know what you're doing, and are aware of limitations. Also, you're only 52. That makes you a master, not old. I've seen you, remember? And that was before this "repair" time.

Re: Susie's Recovery Log

Yup...50s isn't old in the general scheme of things. It's not 20, but you'll look back at this when you're 80 and think "god I was young then!"
You're doing great so far - just keep listening to your body and you'll be fine. Most people in your situation would hit the couch, but you're not most people, you're stronger than that. Keep putting the globo kiddies in their place.

Re: Susie's Recovery Log

Yesterday I got a sobering message from my surgeon. I noticed an increase in symptoms after my workout, and I thought I'd ask him for a referral for physical therapy. He told me he didn't want me to engage in physical therapy until after my bones fuse.

It dawned on me that if I'm not supposed to do PT until I have stability in my neck, I probably shouldn't be doing body rows, declined situps and work with weights. My doc was pretty clear about restricting my activity to walking only.

Given the numbness and tingling I feel in my legs today, I think that's probably the right advice.

Man, I hate this. It's going to take more discipline to NOT DO than it would to do.

I would hate to need to him to go in again and fix something I broke.

Susie

Susie- you will come back quickly when it's the right time. You got to a great level of fitness before, and it will come back. Take 'er easy and heal.
