Kent what do you mean by, "carries a significant psychological impact as well."

A slap is more of a demeaning strike whereas a punch is to cause harm. You can think of it as "You are not worthy of my punch therefor I shall slap you".

Re: Why do you like Krav Maga?

I'm familiar with a ridge hand, also a knife hand. I try to train primarily hammer fist strikes for punches. A hooking slap is also pretty devastating, especially if you hit certain targets.

As for Tony Blauer, I don't care for the SPEAR concept as a way or focus of training, or something to train around. Also, I know more than a few people with police and military experience to draw on that I can receive instruction from, and that is more relevant to me than Blauer's material.

My only criticism of KM is it does not teach enough boxing. Punches are more powerful than palm strikes in my opinion.
I know nothing about KM, but maybe the strikes are less of a punching style to protect knuckles? As me and my broken knuckle how well punches worked in my last fight at work

Are you sure you understand what Tony is teaching with the SPEAR System?

Re: Why do you like Krav Maga?

I would rate myself about 95% certain that I understand what is being taught with the SPEAR. I watched the PDR video that I had, I've reviewed a few other Blauer videos, and talked to some other people who've trained under Blauer. I simply don't feel that it works for me, my style of training and fighting, and where I am called to fight.

Tony really isn't teaching a fighting system, or a way to fight, but rather how to get to your system from an ambush situation.

Re: Why do you like Krav Maga?

Okay, let me rephrase. I don't feel that I need the SPEAR system.

Nothing wrong with that as long as you understand the purpose of the system, which seems to be many people that haven't studied with Tony.

Bumpin'

Here's a pretty interesting video on Krav Maga, if you've got 45 minutes to spare.
