Installing pull-up bar onto rafters

So I have standard 16" spaced rafters in my garage. I bought a pull-up bar from again faster. Unfortunately I can only bolt in along the length of the rafters. I want to save some ceiling space and bolt the pull-up bar along the perpendicular edge.

Is it possible to put 2x6's in between rafters with joist hangers and still be able to withstand a lot of force?

Yes just brace the 2x4 or 2x6 firmly across the joist and it will be fine. I did the same things with mine and my rings and they are solid
