Re: What I'd like to see at the 2012 games

It just hit me...Lets see a dunk contest. Yep, that's right...a Dunk Contest. Spencer Hendel has a 55.5" box jump? Great. He should be able to dunk a bball.

(just thinking outside the box here...pun definitely intended)

The problem if they do only that, or a majority of mainsite flavored wods is the common retort "CrossFit Games only find the best CrossFitter". It's already a weak retort as is given how broad the types of workouts that occur in the games. When the games offer competitions that exist in all competitive athletic areas on top of first responder and special forces flavored wods, such statements lose even more credibility.

Guess it won't matter. People will claim any WOD picked will be CrossFit WOD. If somebodies lifting something a lot of times it must be CrossFit. If someone's running, then jumping, then climbing then it must be CrossFit. If someone's throwing something for distance it must be CrossFit. If someone's doing an obstacle course it must be CrossFit. Hmm, guess CrossFit must be all things and nothing. It's like the Shrodinger's cat of workouts where you don't know how its helping you until your tested at something you didn't work on.

yea, I was thinking about that...I know those guys can jump, but Speal is like 5'5" on a clear day. I'd say let em try dunking balls of different sizes. golf ball, then tennis ball, then softball, then volley ball. etc.

Idk...maybe it's not such a great idea lol.

My original idea was a vertical jump test and a few other NFL combine-esque markers.

Re: What I'd like to see at the 2012 games

There's a video in the vault of "AFT" (Brett Marshall) from back in 2007 grabbing a 10' rim. For those of you who don't know who he is, he was competitor at the first CF Games - he came in second, beating Josh Everett by 2 points and just losing to OPT by 2 points. He is 5'5" on a good day. He reaches the rim, by kipping - in the air.

Seriously though, a max height box jump would be good. Give them say 5 minutes to complete the highest box jump they can.

Wouldn't the short guys complain about the taller guys having an advantage just like the BW for max guys complain about the lighter guys owning on this?

Joys that someone's always going to be upset about something...

As noted with the bodyweight and max effort stuff - if it is one of several events, weighted equally with the others, I do not see this as a problem.
If by some stroke of crazy luck a 6'6" dude with a 70" Vert makes it to The Games, then he's going to probably win that event, but he's going to have a big disadvantage on a lot of other moves - especially something like "Ground to Overhead" (regardless of weight), just based on the fact of how far he has to move the bar compared to a guy who is only 5'5".

CrossFit punishes the specialist, doesn't it?
