I was going to suggest INOVs I have run numerous in them and think they are amongst the best for OCR.

If not, try these: http://www.511tactical.com/recon-trainer-women-s.html (WSF) I own two pairs (link is for women's) and they are great for Crossfit and terrain running or
http://www.amazon.com/Merrell-Womens...p_89%3AMerrell (WSF) I own three pair; solid shoes!

Hope this helps.

Michael

Just wear your shoes. I doubt they will make you wade through hot tar. Unless you just want a new pair of shoes, which is fine.

Whatever is broken in. I got like 4 pairs of shoes. 2 old pairs I keep just for stuff like that or when I know I'll be deep in mud or junk.

Re: shoes for a spartan race

I always run OCRs in my trail runners. They can get muddy, but I just hose them off. They are similar to these WFS:

I have gotten my Inov8s super muddy before and thrown them in the washer to good effect.

Re: shoes for a spartan race

I ran a tough mudder earlier this year and ran in some new balance trail running shoes (MT810 specifically). not too heavy, good protection, and drained well after water/swimming portions.

I'm guessing pretty much any trail running shoes will do.

I would suggest two things that you may not have thought of, though, that ended up being super beneficial:

ankle gaiter -- just for keeping the rocks out. you know how annoying that sht can be if even 1 little pebble gets into your shoe when you're running

multiwrap -- perfect for keeping the sun off your head, wiping down sweat/water, and most importantly protecting your from any dust that gets kicked up by other runners in particularly dusty sections (e.g. there was a lot of dusty hills on the course and when there was a pack running through it, you were running through a cloud of dirt. at those times, i went 'ninja mode' at it worked wonders).

the multiwrap doesn't have to be anything expensive. i just used one that i had in a 3 pack for like $10 (that's me in the last pic).

Re: shoes for a spartan race

Thanks guys I've done a spartan race 2 or 3 years ago but it completely destroyed my shoes. Pretty fond of my inov8s but I guess I can always buy something new if they get destroyed.

Thanks again

Re: shoes for a spartan race

I did a Warrior Dash. I wore the absolute most trashed shoes I had and threw them out when I was done. There was a huge pile of shoes there that people were throwing out.

Re: shoes for a spartan race

Wear shoes you don't care about because they won't be salvageable when you're done.

Re: shoes for a spartan race

When I did the Trifecta I decided to make the plunge and picked up the first version of the Reebok Spartan Super that they created. Of the ones I've used it's at least for me a fantastic piece of footwear. It took my around 8 hrs for the beast and they took everything I threw at them, I even PRd a trail half marathon in them the same year.
