Spin bike?

I was watching the cfit games the other night and I noticed a quick commercial teaser that had cfitters using spin bikes.

Why can't I find any refrence to spin bikes being used in WODS? I ask bc I have an old spin bike with a weighted wheel and it crushes me when I use it for interval work. Thinking of putting it in my garage cfit gym but it will take up space...

Just looking for opinions or people who use spinning in their programming.

Thanks!
Kevin

Re: Spin bike?

All out, high intensity spinning would be a pretty interesting curve ball to throw in the mix. Can you imagine doing 10-15 reps of fairly heavy back squat followed by a 1 K bike sprint for time? Ouch!

We have and use spin bikes at my affiliate, biking is programmed occasionally, and they are also used as a sub for running when the weather interferes (in the winter months this is good otherwise we would end up rowing all the time). They also come in handy for endurance classes.

Re: Spin bike?

As an affiliate owner it comes down to space and money. Good spin bikes are expensive and floor space is hard to give up to a row of spin bikes.

I would absolutely put one in your garage gym if you already own one. When I did interval training on a stationary bike, in AZ our problem is summer not winter, it was very effective.

In my "I hit the lottery and am building the ultimate CrossFit Gym dreams" include Watt Bikes ($5,000 each) and indoor full track and a 25m pool.

Yea, or like 7x225 front squats then a 700m bike followed by some monkey bars!

*note* This was a CF games workout, day 2 I believe. So, after this year's games, not really a curve ball anymore. Still would suck.

Re: Spin bike?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm going to bring it back from the dead and put it in my cfit garage gym! Although I know I will regret it during my first "spin wod"!

Thanks!

Yeah, I know Just trying to keep things basic. I'm more from the simple+shprt+very intense school of thought. Combining a relatively heavy load for mid-range reps with tabata biking would be rough too.

And then get off the bike and push a prowler for 40~50 yards just for kicks!

Re: Spin bike?

Not quite the same as a spin bike, but I have five Schwinn AirDynes at my affiliate, all purchased on craigslist for $125-250. I regularly program their use by a full range of clients, from novice to advanced. They take up very little floor space, and allow for nearly unmatched intensity when used properly.

Like Adam C said above, play around with bike and see what comes of it...
