Max Rep MUs

I just watched the "Crossfitters are strong" video, and was inspired by Annie's MUs to improve my own numbers. I'm going to work it at the same time as I'm working on PUs for Eugene's birthday competition, wondering if anyone wants to compete (against themselves, of course). Shoot for max reps on Dec. 1st. I'm around 7 now, going for 10.

I'll go for max MU's next chance I get. Since I can't do them at home, they are actually great fun when I get the opportunity.

Kipping?

I'm going to get a max set of MUs one of these days, but I'm sure it'll just devolve into "how hard can I kip," and I'm not sure whether I should try to avoid that.

Re: Max Rep MUs

I'm curious how you'd approach this? Do you work submaximal everyday up to the "max day"? Do you take a couple days off doing any major back work 2-3 days before the max day? My biggest jump in numbers (from 1 to 4) came when I was "forced" to take a week off on vacation.

I think I would also have the problem of starting out strict - no kip and being able to do 3-4 and will be kipping the rest.

What's wrong with kipping? Besides, taking that away would also lose a lot of the competition.

Re: Max Rep MUs

Nothing wrong, just a different protocol. Analogous to strict vs. kipping pullups. I would potentially be more interested in my strict MU numbers because I'd imagine the kipping number would reflect my kipping pullup ability more than anything; I'm more interested in the strength quantifier than the metcon one, which is already covered by the kipping pullups. If that makes any sense...

Re: Max Rep MUs

Kipping pull-up ability, yes, but that's not all there is to it. It has to be a much more powerful pull-up to get past the transition. This was the main reason I couldn't get more muscle-ups. The pull-up wasn't good enough and I got off the rings instead of trying again. That or I would get past the transition but I would be unstable and then drop.

Anyways, there is also dip strength/endurance. If you look at the video Skylar was talking about, Annie's muscle-ups were limited because she couldn't complete the dip. Then, obviously, there is technique.

If you want to do strict, though, that's certainly not a bad thing.

Re: Max Rep MUs

My personal best was a set of 12 deadhang MU's this summer. On a high bar I can bang out 8 deadhang. I should shoot for some more when I get the chance. Anybody in for a 21 rep club?

Re: Max Rep MUs

I haven't done them in awhile, but I demo'd two the other day and they felt great. I may attack a new MU PR soon ... currently at 10.
