Should you work on kipping pull ups before you can do a strict pull up?

I know the answer to this question is here somewhere but I haven't been able to find it again (I think I found it a few weeks ago but I didn't write it down!).

Sorry for a repeat question, but should I work on kipping pull ups even though I can't do a strict pull up?

I've always been pretty weak in the upper body, and even though its improved immensely since beginning CF, I still can't do a strict pull up. I've been watching the videos on kippings and I feel like I should start working on them... I figure if I can get the movement down and start practicing the kipping version, I'll eventually get my chin over that bar. Is this the right way to go about it?

thanks in advance

You might look for the Dead Hang Pullup Society thread, which has lots of suggestions and support for the pullup-challenged.

Opinions are mixed on the to kip or not to kip question. The concern, as I understand it, is that kipping safely requires strong back and shoulder muscles. If you can't do a dead hang pullup, you might not be strong enough to control the descent on the kip, in which case you'll be dropping your body weight on your shoulder sockets. That's bad.

Over on Rip's forum, he's advocated getting the strength for a respectable showing with dead hang pullups before moving to kipping. Though in the long term doing both types - for different reasons.

thank you both for responding

I think I'll take a look at that thread, and will continue to work on improving my strict pull ups before crossing over to the kippings... man what a bummer, but given the responses, glad I asked!

Rips Forum: http://www.************.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=36

And as has been said above, work on both. Definitely continue working towards dead hang pull-ups, but if you start working the swing of a kip a little as well I don't see much harm in that.

Just don't drop the dead hangs as soon as you can kip.

Work both, all.

I think you should be working kipping pullups in a band, deadhang pullup progressions, and the basic kipping C swing for shoulder mobility and to loosen up your spine as a beginner.
