Bumper Plates

I know this question has been asked a million times and I did use the search function but I was still unable to find the answer I'm looking for so here goes...

I want to buy some bumper plates but I'm trying to find the cheapest ones possible. I'm a 20 year old college student so I really don't have $500 to drop on a weight set. Awhile back when I was looking into bumper plates I found a post on this forum by someone who was offering a discount to crossfitters -- he was selling them for $1.25 a pound or something in that general area. Does this sound familiar to anyone? If not, could someone possibly point me in the right direction and help a young crossfitter spread the word.

Thanks! Your help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Bumper Plates

I just picked up 4-45s and 2-25s PLUS a sweet bar from Wright Rubber. All that cost $567. He works it out to $1/pound for the bumpers and then will work out shipping depending on where you live. I'm in Maine and shipping was like 100 bucks. That was for 220 lbs of rubber and a bar though. Depends on how much you want to get I guess. Shoot Jason an e-mail and he'll hook you up, tell him you're a XFitter.

He was great to deal with and his stuff is nice, steel inserts in the bumpers, cheap but not cheap if you know what that means. The bar is pretty sweet too, I haven't thoroughly abused it yet, but plan on it. It was the best deal around I could find for quality stuff, and I researched for about a month here on the boards and the web. Just my 2 cents

Re: Bumper Plates

You are not too far from Rogue Fitness. I would contact them and see what kind of deal they can give you on shipping.

Re: Bumper Plates

Hit up Craig's list and get an Oly set with bar and weights for less than $200. Buy a set of Rogue's Hi-Temp 25lb bumper plates. When going overhead, use the smaller diameter iron weights along with the bumper plates. As you progress, get a good bar and more bumpers as you see fit.

Re: Bumper Plates

That is how I started except with a pair of 25's and a pair of 45's. I had a cheap bar and Iron plates to make up the difference. This worked out well until I was able to afford more plates and a decent bar.

Re: Bumper Plates

There is an add on Craigslist for Bumpers in Chicago at $1.5/lb. This is Fitness Factory Outlet. You can probably get them a little lower. I have seen these and they are the ones made by Wright Rubber. My vote is 10s,25s,45s. 10s are nice for practicing the olifts.

Re: Bumper Plates

<jhughes@wrightexercise.com>Is the way to go. 2- 10lbs. 2-25lbs. and 2-45lbs. for like $260inc shipping.

I live right down the road from New York Barbell and it would cost me $360 to pick the same weights up my self.

Rogue Hi-temp vs Pendlay Econ vs Wright Rubber

Looking to buy a set of bumpers for a home gym and need some help because I don't have any experience with bumpers. Currently deciding between the following three:

ROGUE Bumper Plates by Hi-Temp
Pendlay Econ Bumper Plates ( new steel inserts, available 3/2/10 )
Wright Rubber (now with steel inserts)

They are all very similar in price after shipping (+/- $15 apart for a 230 lb set). So which is the best entry level bumper (most accurate weights, durability)?

Anyone know of any stores in the Long Island, NY area that sells bumpers?
