Caffeine and Creatine

I've seen a bunch of stuff around the net about caffeine counteracting the effects of creatine. John Welbourn often blogs about using both as training aids. Anyone have any solid information on this? Can one use both?

Re: Caffeine and Creatine

The article I saw was from bodybuilding.com (I know) WFS but there are tons of websites talking about it if you just google 'creatine and coffee'

I was just wondering if anyone out there has played with the combo, and if its something I should consider before combining them (coffee pre-workout, creatine post).

Re: Caffeine and Creatine

Never heard such a thing. I use caffene to make me more energetic and the creatine gives a great pump.

Re: Caffeine and Creatine

Creatine gives you a pump?? Anyone else find that a little odd?

In response to the OP, there are a lot of unsubstantiated claims about the ineffectiveness of creatine used with caffeine, citric acid, etc. Until you find a valid source that proves it, I say just go with it. Or if you're paranoid, avoid it. I don't see anything wrong with taking caffeine prior to training, and taking creatine post-training.

Thanks for the reassurance. As long as there isn't a consensus on it, I'll try it. Cheers.

Re: Caffeine and Creatine

I've been in the supp industry for many years, and I've never heard that...and just my .02 about "the pump" - I don't feel it, but some do because of the creatine having the ability to draw more water in the muscle cells. It happens quicker is some folks, that's also the reason some people get terrible bloat from creatine use and others don't...

Alright thanks all. I wanted to make sure it wasn't a common issue.

Thought bloat was all from impurities in the creatine?

Most of the articles out there, at least that I have read, are con creatine with caffeine b/c the caffeine if taken especially in excess will dehydrate you, and when you are taking creatine, dehydration is the last thing you want. As for the cancelling eachother out, that doesn't happen. The other thing to be careful of as well is taking the creatine products which have a stimulant already in them for two reasons one being drinking coffee around the same time as one of these products, ie NO shotgun will probably overload you with too much caffeine. I personally tried to stay away from NO products around the same time as stimulants (caffeine etc) since I felt it decreased the effects of the NO... NO is a vasodilator while caffeine will vasoconstrict. Hope this helps.
