I spent the last half year focusing on the Olympic Lifts, with a dash of gymnastics, one or two 5-15 minute circuit workouts a week. Recently I threw in some sprints, too, less than a hundred meters, a couple times a week, to work on my speed.

The day after a heavy back squat on monday, I didn't feel like it was a good idea to do a weighted circuit, so I decided to test my mile. The last time I raced a mile was in high school, 4 years ago. I weighed ~140 pounds then, and after 4 years of distance-specific training and a taper, I raced 4:48 at the State championship. On Tuesday, without a warm-up, a taper, or any specific training, about 30 pounds heavier, I pulled off a 5:10 with enough gas left in the tank to do a burpee and sprint circuit afterwards. Cracking five on my next attempt should be a cinch; I went out very conservatively, expecting to burn out.

I knew CrossFit-style circuits would deliver carryover to monostructural efforts, but I didn't know that it would be THIS good.

LSD is bad for you,

Ross Hunt

Good job Ross. That's a great time, and it's good to know that it can be done without specifically training for it.
