Working through elbow pain? Worst on pullups

Hi everyone,

I've been doing CF for about eighteen months, on and off. Lately, it's been more on than off, and I've got to the stage where I can do quite a few of the WOD's as Rx. Making some good leaps and bounds in progress.

I always try to keep good form, particularly on overhead shoulder stuff, due to a previous torn shoulder tendon (the supra-spinatus). I began really working dilligently on pull ups, kipping style, to open up my shoulder flexibility for that reason. Which kinda brings me to my question.

Lately (last one or two months) I've noticed a slight tenderness in my inner left elbow. I'm left handed, and know I probably favour that arm in exercise. I know from looking at previous posts/threads that it's likely tendonitis, or golfer's elbow.

My question is this - given that I don't want to lose all these hard won yards, is there any benefit in perhaps strapping the elbow to continue pull ups? That's the only exercise that seems to really aggravate the elbow.

Any ideas? I'd really appreciate any advice on this suggestion..

Just to emphasise Steven's point:

REST NOW BEFORE IT GETS WORSE!

I would do this:
  • Stop anything that aggravates the injury
  • When the inflammation has gone down start on strengthening exercises as you'll find in other comments
  • After a month or so start back on pullups
  • Build volume for another month
  • Get back to full-speed and never worry about your elbows again!

I've been battling this problem for, oh, nine months or more. I wish I'd switched straight to rehab as soon as the problem flared up. I could have fixed it and gotten back to full upper body workouts by now.

Thanks Steve, and Noel.

I'd gotten the idea that total rest was probably the best solution.
Looks like it's staring wistfully at the chinup bar til it's better.
I'll find other things to work on between now and then. Thanks again !
