Hey gang,

I’m looking for specific ideas about incorporating swims into a WOD. I’m looking for swiming WODs in the Crossfit style (short, intense, etc.). Time is very limited so no workout over 25min need apply.

Is it difficult to teach yourself good swimming technique? Growing up in VT, the only swimming I did was in rivers, nothing competitive. I'd love to learn, as it seems both hard working and relaxing, like running.

IMO, teaching yourself good swimming technique from the ground up is next to impossible. If you already have decent technique, I think you can refine it on your own. But to completely tear down and rebuild bad or non-existent technique, you need a way to see what you're doing and/or have someone describing it to you and correcting it. If you don't have a coach, the best you could do would be with video. That would require you to tape yourself...OK, that part isn't too hard. But then you'll need to review the tape immediately during sessions. IMO it's not enough to tape 20-30 minutes worth of swimming and then look at it later, you need the immediate feedback/correction. Plus you have to deal with the fact that a lot of what you do as a swimmer isn't visible above the water...so a video camera is going to have a tough time catching it.

Sorry to be kinda negative about it...but I think it'd be very difficult. TI is good stuff, but IMO the books, etc. are much better suited for someone that's already a pretty good swimmer. If you're really hurting, I'd suggest attending one of their weekend seminars, where you'd have a qualified coach watching and correcting you. The lessons you learned over that time would be invaluable.

I've done a few self styled workouts with swimming. Pretty easy to be honest. You can do sprints or anything where your work intensly. Half a lap, rest 10-20 seconds, half a lap. (Tabata-style). I did one where I did two 5minute intervals on a rowing machine and then a few swimming sprints. I found that was a good combination. I think a heavy back workout like cleans, dead lifts, or snatches is a good mix. If you did pullups or presses your arms and shoulders may be too tired once you get in the water. You could run before a swim also. Just think of something crazy that forces you to work hard and try it. Try not to drown.

I'm not sure if i agree with Matt's point. I was an occassional swimmer who had awful technique, but over the last few months i've improved a lot just by regularly practising the stuff I picked up from browsing the TI website.

OK I'm not a champion, and intend to have a few lessons ahead of the triathlon i'm training for, but i still think you can much improve your technique yourself (certainly get much more efficient).
