Re: In college - thoughts on crossfit as a career?

Becca - very true about the love/work connection and running a business certainly IS hard work; dad started one up mid-occupation somewhere else and I watched him work tirelessly and be stressed and anxious and downright . However, he does, like you said, love it. The only thing I don't think we agree upon is the earning less than I deserve/work more hours than I should. Who is to say how much money I personally should make? - my degree or background doesn't, it just says what I know and have experienced - degrees don't come with salaries, rather it's up to the holder to use the degree as a means to an end. It's probably the stubborn youth in me but I feel pay and hours should be determined by my work ethic in the situation of entrepreneurship; if I work at a slow, mundane pace on all the 'boring stuff' then of course the hours will be long. But if I were to go into such a situation with an embracing and not enduring attitude, which is something unconsciously occurring everyday, I would not only bring expertise but also efficiency. Yes, it would still be defined as work, and some parts would feel like work a whole lot more than others, but it would be what I want. If I want something, I won't let pride and self-worth in the form of a paycheck and a timesheet get in the way.

I just looked back at my L1 notes from last fall and saw that programming wasn't a huge part of the cert--maybe 30 minutes were spent on it. Dave Castro gave the class and the main thing he talked about was types of WODs (single vs. double vs. triple modality and all combinations of it), considerations on whether to make a WOD work-based or time-based, and plusses and minuses of X days on/Y days off programming and why 3/1 works "best." The one thing I remember clearly was him saying that you absolutely must go heavy at least once a week for the mental and hormonal benefits that only heavy reps can provide. That was one of the major complaints coming out of the Greyskull mess and from others as well, that affiliates aren't paying enough attention to strength. As others have pointed out, you gear your programming towards the goals of your clients. But I have heard that programming lectures at recent certs have started to blast the "any ***hole metcons" which lots of affiliates seem to rely on.

Aside from proven methods (SS for novice lifters or MEBB for O-lifters, for example) you can debate theoretical benefits of any sort of programming without coming to a solid consensus, so the only way to compare is through the results of the athletes performing the programming.

BTW not meant to be read in an argumentative tone by any means, I really appreciate you taking your time to add what you have.
