First Powerlifting Competition

So I'm planning to compete in my first powerlifting competition in July. I'm just wondering if it is worthwhile to purchase a powerlifting suit or not? Any suggestions or any other comments for the first competition?

Re: First Powerlifting Competition

Are you talking about a singlet or a squat suit? If you are lifting raw, singlets are required by every powerlifting organization that I'm aware of. If you're talking about a squat suit, that would put you into the "geared" classification. I wouldn't switch to geared for a competition if I wasn't already training geared.

I'd suggest raw for your first contest. Go compete, have fun, see how it runs and learn. Getting comfortable with gear can take a while.

Re: First Powerlifting Competition

Practice squatting early on Saturday morning. If you normally train in the pm its a big difference.

Don't lift heavy the week of your comp no matter what. You should have an idea of your openers, something you could triple pretty confidently.
1st attempt - 80-85%
2nd attempt - 90-95%
3rd attempt - 100-105+ % of max

Get some sleep friday night. Saturday will be a long day. If its a big meet you might be deadlifting after dinnertime.

You'll probably get a few red lights for small technique things like feet sliding out on bench or squat, not listening to commands... Thats all part of it. Ask a lot of questions. Have fun.

Re: First Powerlifting Competition

Advice for a powerlifting meet

Rest up, if you have been doing CF then a PL meet will feel like a walk in the park. No need to train right up to before the meet, save your strength for meet time(take at least 5 days off before the meet).

Have a singlet, if not you can't compete in legit feds

Know at least your first 2 attempts you want for each lift. Make sure your opener can be done for about 2-3 reps in training.

Be smart on your warmups and dont take you opener in the back room

wait for all the commands and use them in your training to prepare.

Have fun and enjoy the meet!
