But my real point was to do the vetting *before* you have your fiancée along with you.

i would go for the choose together..

I love sapphires or of course blue diamonds ( cannot afford the latter LOL) but i have blue sapphires and diamonds for my engagement ring...

The world diamond market is definitely a concern. Have you thought about estate jewelry? It's true that "Diamonds are forever." Even an expert can't tell if a diamond is new or if it was cut a hundred years ago. If used diamonds are on the market, why contribute to the problem by buying new?

To both questions, the only person who matters is the recipient.

My wife's engagement ring was $200 at sears. 5 blue sapphire flower petals with a clear sapphire in the middle and a row of I think 9 small clear sapphires below, set in an intricate 10 carot white gold band. The sapphires aren't even natural (lab-made).

Cheap? Cheezy? People can say so if they want, but she picked it out, and 5 years later she still loves it. And I'll add still gets compliments on it out of the blue from strangers. If she had wanted a diamond I'd have bought one.

Get a super simple inexpensive band, or a plastic toy ring, or a hello kitty ring if she likes cats, or tie a string around her finger and make it as part of a special proposal that you know she will love....then go chose a ring together after she says yes is my vote. She's going to wear that ring everyday for the rest of her life, it's only kind to make sure it's one she actually likes.
